A First-Timers Guide to Kerala — Houseboats, Hills, Backwaters

Kerala is Indias gentle introduction to the south — green, slow, soulful. A 7-day first-timer loop covers three distinct Keralas without ever feeling rushed.
Days 1-2: Fort Kochi
Fly into Cochin, stay in a heritage property in Fort Kochi. Walk the Chinese fishing nets at sunset, see a Kathakali performance, eat grilled seafood at a Princess Street cafe, and wander Jew Town for spices and antiques.
Days 3-4: Munnar
Drive inland to Munnar through rolling tea gardens. Stay at a plantation bungalow, walk the Kolukkumalai tea estate at dawn, drink chukku kaapi with locals, and eat Kerala thalis on banana leaves.
Days 5-6: Alleppey Backwaters
The centrepiece — a private kettuvallam houseboat with its own chef. Puttu-kadala for breakfast, fresh karimeen-pollichathu for lunch, sunset on the deck with tender coconut water.
Day 7: Kumarakom & depart
Finish with a morning bird-walk at Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, one final Ayurvedic massage, and the drive back to Cochin. Youll be ready to plan the return visit.
