Ladakh in October — The Sweet Spot Most Travellers Miss

Most travellers do Ladakh in June-September. The honest secret: October is the sweet spot. The summer crowds have cleared, peak-season prices have softened, and Pangong Tso, Nubra Valley and Tso Moriri are still fully accessible before the winter passes close. Days are crisp and clear, nights are chilly but manageable with good layers.
What works
Monastery visits at Thiksey, Diskit and Hemis are glorious in the slanting October light. The roads to Khardung-La and Chang-La remain open. Pangong Lake is still driveable, and you can stay in a warm lakeside camp without the summer crowds. Trekking the Markha Valley is at its best.
What to pack
Proper layers — thermal base, fleece mid, down outer, windproof shell. A good winter sleeping bag if you are camping. Sunglasses and SPF 50 — the high-altitude sun is ferocious. And come acclimatised — give yourself two full days in Leh before any high-passes.
Book early
October rooms are cheaper than July, but the best lake-view camps still sell out. Book 6-8 weeks in advance. Our October Ladakh departures run in small groups of 8-10 and include two acclimatisation days at The Grand Dragon in Leh.
