Goa: Sun, Sand, and Susegad

Goa is India's smallest state but its most distinctive — 450 years of Portuguese colonial rule left behind whitewashed churches, cobbled lanes, indo-Portuguese mansions, and a cuisine unlike any other in India. Add 100 km of palm-fringed coastline, friendly susegad (relaxed) culture, and excellent seafood, and you have one of Asia's great beach destinations.

North vs South Goa

North Goa (Anjuna, Vagator, Calangute, Baga) is the lively side — bustling beach shacks, flea markets, sunset parties, water sports. South Goa (Palolem, Agonda, Patnem, Cavelossim) is quieter and more upscale — boutique resorts, near-empty beaches, fishing villages, yoga retreats. Our 5-day itinerary spends two nights in each, with one night in Old Goa for the heritage.

Beyond the beach

Old Goa — the former Portuguese capital, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site with Basilica of Bom Jesus (housing St Francis Xavier's relics), Se Cathedral (Asia's largest), and Church of St Cajetan. Spice plantation tour with a traditional Goan lunch on banana leaves. Sunset cruise on the Mandovi River with live Konkani music. Visit a feni distillery (Goa's traditional cashew-fruit spirit). Birdwatching at Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary in Chorao.

The food

Goan cuisine is its own pleasure: prawn balchão, pork vindaloo, fish recheado, sorpotel, bebinca for dessert. We arrange meals at heritage houses where families serve recipes passed down for generations.

When to go

November to February is peak season — perfect weather but crowded and expensive. October and March are shoulder months — good weather, fewer crowds, better rates. April-May is hot. June-September is monsoon — wild seas, lush green countryside, very few tourists, and best for spice plantations and Ayurveda.

Goa done right

I've been to Goa many times but this tour showed me a different side — the spice plantation, Old Goa churches, and the authentic Goan cooking class were eye-openers. The South Goa resort was peaceful and the Mandovi sunset cruise was the perfect closer.
