Amritsar
The spiritual and cultural capital of Punjab — home to the luminous Golden Temple, the solemn Jallianwala Bagh, and the theatrical Wagah border ceremony. A city defined by langar hospitality, Punjabi cuisine, and the living faith of Sikhism.
Amritsar: Faith and Food
The spiritual capital of Sikhism, founded in 1577 by the fourth Sikh Guru. The city is home to the most visited religious monument in the world (after Mecca) — the Golden Temple — and to some of the most generous hospitality and best food in India.
The Golden Temple
Sri Harmandir Sahib welcomes visitors of all faiths. Cover your head, remove shoes, walk the marble parikrama around the holy pool. The langar (community kitchen) feeds 100,000+ people daily, free, regardless of background — the world's largest community kitchen.
Wagah Border
The daily flag-lowering ceremony at the India-Pakistan border, 32 km from Amritsar, is theatre at its most patriotic — high-kicking Border Security Force soldiers, chanting crowds, sunset over the Punjab plains.
The food
Amritsari kulcha, butter chicken at Beera Chicken (since 1959), sarson da saag with makki di roti, lassi in earthen kulhads at Gian di Lassi, and jalebi at Gurdas Ram (since 1956).
