Hampi
The UNESCO-listed ruins of the Vijayanagara Empire — a 40 sqkm boulder-strewn landscape of 14th-century temples, royal enclosures, and stone chariots. One of Indias most photogenic and spiritually resonant sites.
Hampi: India's Forgotten Empire
The capital of the Vijayanagara Empire (1336-1565) — once the second-largest city in the world after Beijing, with half a million residents and wealth that astonished Portuguese travellers. Sacked by Mughal armies in 1565, today it's one of India's most extraordinary archaeological sites.
The monuments
Virupaksha Temple (still functioning, 1,300+ years), Vittala Temple with its musical pillars and stone chariot, Lotus Mahal, Elephant Stables, Queen's Bath, Hazara Rama Temple with thousands of carved Ramayana panels.
The landscape
A surreal moonscape of giant balanced boulders said to be 3 billion years old. The Tungabhadra River winds through banana plantations. Sunset from Hemakuta Hill, sunrise from Matanga Hill — both unforgettable.
Practicalities
3-4 days minimum. Reachable by overnight train from Bangalore (Hospet station). Best season October-February. Closed walking shoes essential — some clambering on rocks.
