Varanasi
The spiritual heart of India — one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Sunrise boat rides on the Ganga, evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat, and a tapestry of temples, alleys, and ashrams.
Varanasi: India's Spiritual Capital
Varanasi (Kashi, Banaras) is older than Rome, older than Athens. For Hindus, it's the holiest of the seven sacred cities; dying here is believed to break the cycle of rebirth. For travellers, it's a sensory storm — 88 ghats descending into the Ganges, sadhus in saffron robes, cremation pyres burning continuously, bell-ringing aartis at dawn and dusk.
The river rituals
A pre-dawn boat ride to watch sunrise turn the ghats gold while bathers perform morning rituals. Evening boat ride to witness Ganga Aarti — 200 oil lamps, conch shells, drums. Visit Manikarnika Ghat (the burning ghat with 3,000+ years of unbroken cremations) and Dashashwamedh (the main aarti site).
The old city
2,000+ temples, narrow alleyways too tight for cars, the Kashi Vishwanath corridor (one of the 12 Jyotirlingas), and the Banaras silk weavers' quarter where 200-year-old looms still produce intricate wedding saris.
Sarnath
10 km away — where the Buddha gave his first sermon after enlightenment. UNESCO site with the Dhamek Stupa and a beautiful Tibetan temple complex.
