Amritsar: Faith, Food, and the Border

Amritsar, the spiritual heart of Sikhism, holds two of India's most moving daily spectacles: the dawn aarti at the Golden Temple, and the evening flag-lowering ceremony at Wagah-Attari border with Pakistan. This 2-day tour covers both, plus the most delicious vegetarian food you'll eat anywhere in India.

The Golden Temple

Sri Harmandir Sahib (the Golden Temple) is more than a religious building — it's a living philosophy of equality and selfless service. Visitors of any faith are welcome; the temple langar (free community kitchen) feeds 100,000+ people every single day, free of charge, in the world's largest community kitchen. We arrange a sunrise visit when the marble pavement is still cool, the gurdwara reflects perfectly in the holy pool, and the kirtan singers fill the courtyard with hymns.

Beyond the temple

Jallianwala Bagh — the site of the 1919 massacre that galvanised India's independence movement, with bullet-marked walls and a memorial well. Partition Museum — a moving documentation of the 1947 partition of India and Pakistan, the largest forced migration in human history. Mata Lal Devi Mandir — a quirky funhouse-style Hindu temple. The Old City bazaars for hand-embroidered phulkari shawls and Punjabi jootis.

Wagah Border

The daily flag-lowering ceremony at the India-Pakistan border (32 km from Amritsar) is theatre at its most patriotic. Border Security Force soldiers from both sides perform an elaborate, high-kicking ceremonial drill while crowds in the bleachers chant. We arrive 90 minutes early for front-row seats and a behind-the-scenes briefing.

The food

Amritsari kulchas, butter chicken (invented at Moti Mahal), sarson da saag with makki di roti, lassi in earthen kulhads, jalebi at Gurdas Ram Jalebi Wala (since 1956). Plus the famous langar meal at the Golden Temple itself.
