Varanasi: 3,000 Years of Faith

Varanasi (also called Kashi or Banaras) is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world — older than Rome, older than Athens, older than Beijing. For Hindus, it's the holiest of the seven sacred cities; dying here is believed to break the cycle of rebirth. For travellers, it's an overwhelming sensory immersion: ghats descending into the Ganges, sadhus meditating in saffron robes, cremation pyres burning continuously, and bell-ringing aartis at dawn and dusk.

The ghats

Varanasi has 88 ghats lining 6 km of the Ganges. We focus on five: Dashashwamedh (the main ghat, site of the evening Ganga Aarti), Manikarnika (the burning ghat, where cremations have continued unbroken for 3,000+ years), Assi (where the Asi river meets the Ganges, popular with yoga practitioners), Tulsi (named for the poet who wrote the Ramcharitmanas), and Panchganga (where five rivers symbolically converge).

The river experiences

A pre-dawn boat ride to watch the sunrise turn the ghats gold while bathers perform morning rituals. An evening boat ride to witness the Ganga Aarti — 200 oil lamps, conch shells, drums, and chanting priests. A walk through the labyrinthine old city with its 2,000+ temples, narrow alleyways too tight for cars, and shops selling everything from silk saris to brass puja items.

Beyond Varanasi

A day trip to Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first sermon after enlightenment — a UNESCO site with the Dhamek Stupa, the ruins of the ancient monastery, and a beautiful Tibetan temple complex.

What to expect

This is not a comfortable, sanitised tour. Cremations happen openly. Cows wander streets. The old city smells of incense, marigolds, and occasionally less pleasant things. But it's also one of the most profound travel experiences anywhere — a city where life and death share the same riverbank without any pretence.

Spiritual journey to Varanasi

The dawn boat ride on the Ganga was profoundly moving. The evening Aarti with thousands of diyas floating downstream is something every traveller should experience once. Our guide was a scholar — patient, respectful, and deeply knowledgeable about both Hindu and Buddhist traditions.
