Shimla — the Queen of Hills

The British summer capital of India from 1864-1947, Shimla preserves its colonial charm — Christ Church on the Ridge, the toy train from Kalka (UNESCO World Heritage), the Mall Road, and the old Viceregal Lodge. We stay at the Wildflower Hall (Oberoi), the former hunting lodge of Lord Kitchener, with private fireplaces, snow-view balconies, and a couples' spa.

Manali — alpine adventure

Two nights in Manali at a boutique chalet on the banks of the Beas River. Day trips to Solang Valley for cable car rides, Hadimba Devi Temple in the cedar forest, Vashisht hot springs, and Old Manali's quiet cafes. Optional adventure activities: paragliding, river rafting, mountain biking — or just stay in and watch the snow-capped Pir Panjal range.

Welcome rose-petal turndown. Private candlelit dinner at a snow point in Solang. Couples Ayurvedic massage. Champagne breakfast on the chalet balcony. Riverside picnic lunch. A traditional Himachali dinner with folk dancers.

When to go

April-June for warm days and cool nights, September-October for autumn colours, December-February for snow (chains required, but magical). Avoid July-August (monsoon, landslides).
